Classic Education

There is a big universe of scholarly writing and information about Classic Education. It's difficult the reduce it to just a few words, but in large part, it's returning to what worked in the past.

As a society, we seem to be obsessed with change. We want change. We demand it. It doesn't matter if the change is worse than what we have now. We just like change.

Education has been developing since Greek and Roman times. There is always room for improvement, but the basic curricula and the materials to teach have been sorted out for a long time. Yes technology evolves and improves with time – so the materials change, sometimes quickly, in a modern technology class.

But for the core classes, what works has been known and established for a long time. Traditional and tested methods and materials work. They have proved that they work over a long period of time.

Traditional ways should not be abandoned or changed just for the sake of change. Find something else to attack - don’t attack education. Advocate for change for something that is unfair or something that needs to be improved. Don’t advocate for change obsessively just for the sake of change.

Maybe the most important discovery will be to find out what worked before and bring it back.
