#25 - Keep going…
You’ve conquered the local school board or some government entity by defeating CRT or getting some textbook banned or getting a program thrown out. Chances are that the issue just reared its ugly head out of nowhere and everyone responded to it like an emergency. And it probably was - a true emergency. Well done! Enjoy the victory. You deserve credit and you should take a well-earned victory lap.
But, you need to keep going. Most of these these efforts to hijack the education system have been around for years, even decades. Or, they are and have been part of an effort that started a long time ago. Collectively, we’ve let our guard down and we’ve let these people and concepts in. Now, we have to be active and vigilant. Unfortunately, we can’t retire.
The system still needs to be changed in a number of ways and then watched and monitored for the foreseeable future. If there isn’t a parental or ethical presence to keep things on track, the same thing will eventually happen again. You get what you inspect, not what you expect.
It would be nice if we could just go back to what we were doing before or relax or do something fun. But, we can’t. Benjamin Franklin said it best; “if you can keep it.” We can have a sane education system if we can keep it.
Actually, we have to get it back first and then keep it. Still a lot of work to do.
Bottom line: keep going. There has been a sea change in the direction of education and we’ll have to stay involved and do more from here on out in order to keep it.
