Some proposals to ponder.

Some proposals to ponder.

In no particular order, here are some of the things we propose. It's an attempt to provide some things that are missing or correct things that are wrong. The strategy is to tackle them one at a time. Trying to do them all, at the same time, is probably not wise. It would be overwhelming. Doing them all, eventually, would improve the education process.

  1. Impose School Board term limits - 6 years.

  2. All School Board position are filled by public election.

  3. Impose rules that prevent School Board from changing, altering or violating State educational statutes.

  4. Require any action or activity of the School Board is fully funded and a part of a balanced budget.

  5. Define a deadline to file proposed book and curricula approval for the next fiscal period one day before the next election.

  6. Subject all curricula, materials and textbooks and bureaucratic regulations to periodic re-authorization and review.

  7. Create a more specific definition of the school district’s purpose, rules and specific standards.

  8. All curriculum changes, new textbooks and materials should be open to 180 day public comment period.

  9. Allow parents to more easily amend the curricula by bypassing the school board.

  10. Create a process where two-thirds of the School Board can nullify any curriculum, textbook or material.

  11. Require each state, county or jurisdiction the have predefined public mechanism for recalling any school board member with or without cause.

  12. All meetings must be publicly announced one least 7 days in advance via radio, television, newspaper and web site.

  13. Detailed minutes including votes showing the “yeas” and “nays” of every vote by every individual on the board. These minutes should be filed with state registries and each jurisdiction’s web site where it can be read and/or downloaded.

  14. Institute a policy limiting the School Boards jurisdiction to books, curricula and materials DIRECTLY related to teaching in schools.

  15. All contracts, including consulting, must be published in newspapers, electronically or online so that there is complete public disclosure before any action is taken. No exceptions.
