#14 - Teach A Man To Fish…
An old proverb says give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
It’s similar in education. Tell students WHAT to think and they might get by for a day. Teach them HOW to think and they’re set for life.
While there are a lot of ways to analyze what critical thinking is, it is simply being able to observe a problem and solve it.
It’s tempting to paint with a broad brush, but it seems people are becoming more and more indoctrinated with beliefs and ideas about this and that that they just parrot. Some professors, groups or populal Web Sites spews their points of view, people just repeat it or dramatize it without thinking it through. Sort of in one ear and out the mouth without going through the brain.
Not to be a Domesday advocate, but if we don’t get back to teaching people how to think, the future doesn’t look too bright. Being able to think critically depends on and is based on knowing a little bit about history and logical thinking, knowing something basic about culture principles and having some values. These are hard to find commodities, today.
